The Rhythm Beneath the Scars is Ethan Rey’s memoir of growing up in Aleppo, becoming a witness to the Syrian uprising, enduring imprisonment and war, losing his brother Abdulwahid, and leaving the country he knew as home.

The later chapters follow exile through Turkey and Europe, arrival in the Netherlands, and the harder question that comes after physical survival: how to build a life when the past is still present. Dance becomes a refuge, photography changes from recording horror to recording joy, and Dancify grows from a desire to give something back to the community that helped him reconnect with life. The scars remain, but they are no longer the whole story.
